Aleatorius
As the name suggests, Aleatorius is a dance that relies on the element of chance and is performed entirely in darkness.
Each dancer wears a leotard with six small red lights attached. The lights are arranged and wired in unique configurations. They are connected, in a matrix, to two mercury switches, powered by a small 12-volt battery which is also attached to the costume. Mercury, being both a liquid and an electrical conductor, reacts to the dancer’s movements, causing one, two or all six lights to be switched on, however any extended sequence is impossible to control embodying that essence of chance that defines the dance.
