Horizontal Line Drawings

The idea that rainwater sitting in a bucket outside in the backyard, much like the sea, is influenced by the gravitational pull of the earth and finds its own horizontal level is intriguing. With this concept in mind, a piece of paper is dipped perpendicularly into a tub of diluted ink, capturing a "true" horizontal line.

Depending on the quality and thickness of the paper and the number of times it enters the water, a whole range of different watermarks can be created. By turning the paper the other way around and repeating the process, the horizon is recreated—that point of tension and equilibrium where "heaven" and "earth" converge.
